Understanding Adrenal Disorders in Children

Adrenal disorders in children can have a major impact on their growth, development, and overall health. That’s because the adrenal glands are responsible for making important hormones that help regulate many body functions. One of the most common adrenal disorders seen in kids is congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH). This genetic condition affects how the adrenal glands produce cortisol, a hormone the body needs to handle stress, regulate blood sugar, and maintain blood pressure. In CAH, the body makes too many androgens (male hormones), which can cause symptoms like ambiguous genitalia in newborn girls, early puberty, and growth problems. A lack of cortisol can also trigger an adrenal crisis, a life-threatening emergency that causes severe dehydration, dangerously low blood pressure, and imbalances in body salts. Early diagnosis and proper treatment are crucial to prevent these serious complications.

Another adrenal disorder that can affect children is Addison’s disease. In this condition, the adrenal glands don’t make enough cortisol and aldosterone. Children with Addison’s disease may feel extremely tired, lose weight, have low blood pressure, and develop darker patches of skin (hyperpigmentation). Addison’s can be caused by autoimmune diseases, infections, or other health problems. Treatment usually involves hormone replacement therapy to bring hormone levels back to normal, and doses often need to be adjusted during times of illness, injury, or stress when the body needs more cortisol.

Caring for children with adrenal disorders requires a team approach. Pediatric endocrinologists work closely with families to create personalized treatment plans that fit each child’s needs. Education is just as important — parents and children need to know the warning signs of an adrenal crisis and the importance of sticking to the treatment plan. Open, ongoing communication between families and healthcare providers helps empower children to better manage their condition. With the right care, support, and awareness, kids with adrenal disorders can live healthier, more active lives.
